Proprietary Production Drives Reverse Mortgage Industry Growth

New View Advisors is pleased to provide the latest edition of its Proprietary Reverse Mortgage Production Index. The index is a quarterly index of the dollar amount of newly originated proprietary reverse mortgage loans in the United States.
Through September, estimated proprietary production increased approximately 48% from the same period in 2025, driving combined reverse mortgage production growth of approximately 14%.
We estimate Proprietary Reverse Mortgage Production at $1.2 billion for Q3 2026, and $3.5 billion year-to-date through September. Proprietary reverse mortgage production totaled approximately $2.4 billion in the first three quarters of 2025.
Meanwhile, new FHA-insured reverse mortgage production (the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage, or “HECM”) continued to decline. Using Ginnie Mae’s first participation HMBS issuance data as a proxy for new HECM production, we estimate that HECM posted just $2.7 billion in the first nine months, and $880 million in the third quarter of 2026.
Proprietary loans accounted for over 60% of total reverse mortgage production in September 2026; we expect this share to increase further.
Rising interest rates may challenge the reverse mortgage industry in the fourth quarter, but proprietary loans could still propel reverse mortgage industry totals to over $8 billion in 2026, versus $7.3 billion in total new originations of reverse mortgages in 2025.
New View Advisors constructed this index from public and private sources. Public data includes publicly available financial statements, rating agency reports, and other reports relating to securitization of proprietary reverse mortgages in the United States.
